What does a marketplace app cost in Australia?
Prices vary a lot. These are the ranges we quote for Australian marketplace builds. All are AUD, ex GST, with design, backend and an admin panel included.
| Build | What you get | Cost (AUD, ex GST) | Timeline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Web MVP | One web app for both sides, one city or category, Stripe Connect payouts, a basic admin panel | $35k – $60k | 2 – 3 months |
| First version | One iOS and Android app with customer and provider modes, or two apps from one codebase. Plus a web admin panel, payments, chat, reviews and notifications | $80k – $150k+ | 4 – 6 months |
| Real-time marketplace | Everything above, plus live location, automatic dispatch and background tracking, like Uber | $150k+ | 6+ months |
Other Australian studios publish wider ranges. Code Workshop, for example, quotes $80k–$300k over 24–52 weeks. Scope explains most of the gap, so compare what each quote includes.
For general app pricing, see how much an app costs in Australia.
Where the money goes: a $110k first version
This is an illustrative split for an Airtasker-style first version. Real quotes move each line with scope.
| Part of the build | Estimate (AUD, ex GST) |
|---|---|
| Discovery, brief and design | $15k |
| Customer and provider app (one React Native codebase) | $35k |
| Backend, payments and payouts with Stripe Connect | $25k |
| Admin panel | $12k |
| Messaging, notifications and reviews | $10k |
| Testing, store release and launch support | $13k |
| Total | $110k |
Not included: legal advice, marketing, provider recruitment and third-party running costs.
Why is a marketplace three products?
A marketplace has two sets of users with different workflows, plus your team in the middle. Each needs its own screens, rules and testing.
The customer side
Customers search, compare, book or post a job, pay, message the provider and leave a review. This side must feel as easy as the big apps they already use.
The provider side
Providers sign up, prove who they are, set prices and availability, accept work and get paid. Onboarding is longer here. Stripe checks identity for payouts. Licences, ABNs or police checks depend on the work, and Stripe doesn’t cover those.
The admin panel
Your team approves providers, handles disputes, issues refunds, bans bad actors and watches the numbers. It is usually a web app. In a test phase it can be very basic, but someone needs these controls.
Which features go in version 1?
Most of the cost sits in a few features. This is how we usually split them for a first release.
| Feature | Who uses it | Version 1? | Build effort |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sign-up and provider checks | Both, admin | Yes | Medium. Stripe’s onboarding covers identity for payouts |
| Listings, search and filters | Customer | Yes | Medium. Location search adds more |
| Booking, quoting or ordering | Both | Yes | High. The core flow, so keep it short |
| Payments, fees and payouts | Both, admin | Yes | High. Use Stripe Connect, never your own money movement |
| In-app messaging | Both | Yes | Medium |
| Reviews and ratings | Both | Yes | Low to medium |
| Report, block and account deletion | Both, admin | Yes | Low to medium. Apple requires them for apps with user content and accounts |
| Push, email and SMS updates | Both | Yes | Medium. One per status change |
| Disputes and refunds | Admin | Yes, manual | Low if your team does it by hand |
| Live tracking and dispatch | Both | Only if core | Very high. Uber needs it, Airtasker doesn’t |
| Provider subscriptions and promoted listings | Provider | Later | Medium. May need in-app purchase |
| Loyalty and referrals | Customer | Later | Medium |
Uber, Airtasker or Airbnb: what changes the price?
“An app like X” tells us the hard part. Each model has a different one.
| Model | The hard part | Our first-version range (AUD, ex GST) |
|---|---|---|
| Airtasker-style tasks | Posting, offers, holding payment until the job is done, reviews | $80k – $130k |
| Airbnb-style bookings | Availability calendars, cancellation rules, deposits, two-way reviews | $90k – $150k |
| Uber-style on demand | Live location, matching the nearest provider, background tracking, surge pricing | $150k+ |
| Product marketplace | Listings with stock, shipping, returns, seller payouts | $70k – $120k |
Holding money until a job is done needs care. An online card hold usually lasts 7 days on Stripe, and some Visa holds less. See Stripe’s authorisation windows.
For jobs further out, charge upfront and delay the provider’s payout. Australian accounts on manual payouts must be paid within 90 days. Stripe says plainly it doesn’t offer escrow.
How do marketplace payments work in Australia?
Use Stripe Connect. It onboards providers, checks identity, splits each payment and pays providers out. Building this yourself means holding other people’s money, which brings licensing questions you don’t want.
Bookings for real-world services skip app store billing. Apple’s Guideline 3.1.3(e) says goods and services used outside the app must be paid another way, like cards or Apple Pay. Google Play has the same carve-out.
Digital extras are different. Provider subscriptions, boosts and promoted listings sold in the app can need in-app purchase. Check each one.
Stripe cut its Australian domestic card rate from 1.70% to 1.65% + A$0.30 on 1 October 2026. International cards drop from 3.5% to 2.8% + A$0.30 on 1 April 2027. Source: Stripe’s notice.
| Fee | Stripe handles pricing | You handle pricing |
|---|---|---|
| Who pays card fees | The provider’s Stripe account | Your platform |
| Platform fee | None | A$2 per monthly active account |
| Payouts | No fee | 0.25% + A$0.25 per payout |
| Funds routing | No fee | 0.25% of payout volume |
| Instant payouts | 1% of payout volume | 1% of payout volume |
| Disputes | A$25 each, plus A$25 to counter (refunded if you win) | A$25 each, plus A$25 to counter (refunded if you win) |
Worked example: 1,000 jobs a month
This is an illustration, not a quote. Say 1,000 jobs at $200 each, or $200,000 of bookings. Your 15% fee earns $30,000. If that includes GST, $2,727 of it goes to the ATO.
If you handle pricing and pay card fees, Stripe’s processing costs $3,300 + $300 = $3,600. Providers receive $170,000.
Say 300 providers get 1,200 payouts between them. Payout fees are 0.25% of $170,000 ($425) plus 1,200 × $0.25 ($300).
Funds routing adds another 0.25% ($425). Stripe lists it as a separate line, so confirm how it applies with them.
The 300 active providers add $2 each ($600). The total is about $5,350, close to 18% of your $30,000 fee.
This leaves out refunds, chargebacks, international cards and currency conversion. If Stripe handles pricing instead, providers pay the card fees, not you. You control less of the experience.
No card surcharges from 1 October 2026
The Reserve Bank’s decision ends surcharges on eftpos, Mastercard and Visa from 1 October 2026. Stripe has turned off surcharging in Australia altogether. Build card costs into your fee.
A flat booking fee that isn’t tied to the payment method is a separate question. Show it in the upfront total, not at checkout. Renaming a card surcharge doesn’t work.
How do you solve the cold-start problem?
No customer joins a marketplace with no providers. No provider joins one with no customers. Solve this before you spend on features.
Liquidity means a customer who searches finds someone good, fast. The steps below are how we’d get there.
- Pick one suburb, city or category. A full marketplace in Bondi beats an empty one across Australia.
- Sign up the supply side first, by hand. Call providers, visit them and load their listings yourself if needed.
- Give providers a reason to use your tool even with no customers yet, like free quoting, invoicing or a booking page.
- Bring demand to that one area with local ads, partnerships and the providers’ own customers.
- Measure fill rate: the share of requests that get a booking. Expand only when it holds up.
- Run the hard parts by hand at first. Matching, approvals and disputes can be your team in the admin panel.
Which Australian rules apply to a marketplace?
This is not legal or tax advice. These are the rules we flag on every marketplace brief. Check how they apply to you with a lawyer and an accountant before launch.
Australian Consumer Law and unfair contract terms
Your terms can’t remove consumer guarantees. Who owes them, you or the provider, depends on how your platform is set up. Private sellers not in business don’t give some guarantees.
Since 9 November 2023, unfair terms in new, renewed or varied standard form contracts can bring penalties.
That covers your contracts with providers too, if they are small businesses with fewer than 100 employees or under $10 million turnover. The ACCC has already acted against an Australian care platform over its terms.
Gig workers: “employee-like” workers and digital labour platforms
The Closing Loopholes reforms created rules for digital labour platforms. A platform is covered if it arranges work by contractors and processes their payments.
Some contractors on these platforms are “employee-like” workers. Among other conditions, they have two of three traits. These are low bargaining power, pay at or below an employee’s, and little control over the work.
Since 26 February 2025, covered platforms must follow the Digital Labour Platform Deactivation Code before removing these workers. Workers with 6 months of regular work, earning under the contractor high income threshold, can apply to the Fair Work Commission. It can order reactivation and lost pay.
The first minimum standards order started on 17 August 2026. The Interim On-Demand Delivery Employee-Like Worker Minimum Standards Order covers app-based food, drink and grocery delivery. It sets pay floors, insurance and record-keeping. More orders may follow for other platform work.
For the app, this means real features. You need deactivation warnings and records, earnings records and a way for workers to respond. Price them in.
GST on your fees
You must register for GST within 21 days once your current or projected GST turnover reaches $75,000. Then you charge GST on your platform fees. Decide early whether your fee is “15% + GST” or GST-inclusive.
On a $30 fee, that is $3 on top, or $2.73 of GST inside the $30. Whether GST applies to the fee or the whole booking depends on your model, so ask your accountant.
Ride-sourcing is different. The ATO treats it as taxi travel, so every driver must register for GST before their first trip, whatever they earn.
Overseas sellers raise another rule. For digital products and low-value imported goods, the platform can be liable for GST on their sales to Australians. Ask your accountant before you allow offshore sellers.
The ATO’s Sharing Economy Reporting Regime
Under the Sharing Economy Reporting Regime, platforms report what their sellers earn. It covered ride-sourcing and short-term stays from 1 July 2023 and most other platform services from 1 July 2024.
You report twice a year: by 31 January and by 31 July. Reports include each seller’s name, contact and bank details and ABN, plus date of birth for individuals. Totals for gross pay, GST and your fees are grouped per seller, per quarter.
Sales of goods where ownership changes hands are not reported. Hire of assets, like cars or equipment, can be.
Collect these details at onboarding and build the report export into the admin panel. Adding them later means chasing thousands of providers.
Privacy and automated decisions
The Privacy Act covers businesses over $3 million turnover, plus some smaller ones, such as those trading in personal information. Check the OAIC’s small business guide. A marketplace holding IDs and bank details should follow the Australian Privacy Principles either way.
From 10 December 2026, covered businesses must explain in their privacy policy decisions that a computer program makes or substantially informs. This applies when the program uses someone’s personal information and the decision could significantly affect them. Automatic deactivation or a blocked payout could qualify. See the OAIC’s fact sheet.
What is the best MVP strategy for a marketplace?
Spend the first dollars proving that both sides turn up. Spend the next ones on the apps.
- Write a one-page brief: the two user types, the one transaction, your fee and the launch area. Our app brief template helps.
- Test demand cheaply. A landing page, a form and you matching people by hand will tell you a lot in a month.
- Build a web MVP for both sides with Stripe Connect and an admin panel.
- Launch in one area. Track fill rate, repeat bookings and how many providers stay active.
- Build the mobile apps once people use it every week. React Native gives you iOS and Android from one codebase.
- Automate the manual work in the order it hurts: usually matching, then payouts, then disputes.
This path spreads the cost. It also means you build the mobile apps against real usage, not guesses. For timing, see how long an app takes to build.
What does a marketplace cost to run after launch?
| Cost | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Stripe | 1.65% + A$0.30 per domestic card payment, plus Connect fees if you handle pricing |
| Hosting and backend | On serverless AWS, we usually see under a few hundred dollars a month at launch. It grows with bookings |
| SMS and email | Each SMS costs a few cents. At 1,000 jobs and 4 texts each, that is 4,000 texts a month |
| Maps and location | Per request once you pass each free tier. See Google’s pricing |
| Identity checks | Per check, if you verify providers beyond Stripe’s own onboarding |
| App stores | Apple US$99 a year, charged in local currency. Google Play a one-off US$25 |
| Updates and support | We plan on 15–20% of the build cost each year |
Worked example: a $100k marketplace × 18% is $18,000 a year to keep it updated and supported. See app maintenance costs for what that covers.
Apptractive is a Sydney studio in North Bondi. We sign an NDA before you share the idea, and every build includes 3 months of free support after launch. Get a free estimate for your marketplace.
Common questions
How much does marketplace app development cost in Australia?
Apptractive quotes $80,000–$150,000+ (AUD, ex GST) for a first version on iOS and Android with a web admin panel, over 4–6 months. A web MVP costs $35,000–$60,000. Live tracking and dispatch push it past $150,000.
How much does it cost to build an app like Uber in Australia?
We estimate an Uber-style app with rider and driver apps, live tracking, dispatch and an admin panel at $150,000+ (AUD, ex GST). A first version takes 6 months or more. Real-time location and matching are most of the extra cost.
How much does it cost to build an app like Airtasker?
We estimate a first version at about $80,000–$130,000 (AUD, ex GST), over 4–6 months. That covers task posting, offers, messaging, reviews, an admin panel and payments that release when the job is done.
How do marketplace apps make money?
Common models are a commission on each transaction, a provider subscription, and paid leads or promoted listings. Some add a flat booking fee shown in the upfront price.
Can I launch a marketplace as a website first?
Yes, and it is often the smart move. A web MVP for both sides costs about $35,000–$60,000 (AUD, ex GST) and takes 2–3 months. It tests whether customers and providers turn up before you pay for mobile apps.
Do I need a licence to hold customer money in Australia?
Holding and moving other people’s money can raise financial services licensing questions. Using Stripe Connect helps, but it doesn’t settle the question by itself. It depends on how money flows in your model, so check with a lawyer.
Are my providers employees or contractors?
It depends on the whole working relationship, not just the contract. Some platform contractors are employee-like workers with extra protections. Get advice from an employment lawyer before launch.
Who owns the code for my marketplace app?
You should. Make sure the contract assigns the custom code and designs to your company, with a licence for any reused components. The Stripe, app store and cloud accounts should be in your name too.
